Q: Why do you make music?
REBECCA RAIN: It’s the ultimate creative outlet and a great way to express myself. To be able to share what inspires me on a deep level with others is just a really cool thing. Music creates such a deep connection between people that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Q: Who would you site as a major influence for your music?
REBECCA RAIN: Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Alison Krauss, Feist, Chantal Kreviazuk
Q: Who do you make music for?
REBECCA RAIN: Myself because I love it, but also for other people so that hopefully they can enjoy it just as as I do. 🙂
Q: How do you share your music with others?
REBECCA RAIN: On stage mostly. I love playing my music for an audience.
Q: What is your favourite way of connecting with fans? Other artists?
REBECCA RAIN: Social Media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and now Go Vidial, at live shows, at local radio stations, blogs, magazines, and TV shows.
Q: What do you use to make your videos?
REBECCA RAIN: Usually just my iPhone.
Q: In relation to your music career, tell us a short story about having to “DIY” it. (Do-It-Yourself).
REBECCA RAIN: A fellow independent musician friend of mine and I were teaming up to a do a show together and we wanted to experiment with a different way of promoting the show. We split the costs on getting flyers made and spent an afternoon handing them out at the mall in the same city we were playing. We got rejected several times that day and we were both so awkward during our rejections that it actually ended up being hilarious and weirdly, a really great memory. To our surprise, we ended up having people come out from the mall, and a few people who couldn’t make it to the show checked out our music online. We agreed it was worth it – we learned how to survive a very rough social situation and made some extra fans along the way.
Q: What’s the one thing you always have with you?
REBECCA RAIN: My purse, which always has guitar picks at the bottom of it in case of an emergency 😉
Q: How do you see the importance of video for musicians today?
REBECCA RAIN: Video opens so many doors, especially for independent musicians. It allows fans to put a personality to the music and to hear their favourite musician play live in an intimate setting whenever they want. I think videos are a really great way to increase exposure, which can lead to more gigs and opportunities all around.
